Telephones & Technology

What exists depends on the year: no telephones in early eras, operators until the 1940s, the telegraph from the 1840s.

The narrator only lets you use technology that existed in your era.

Telephones

  • Before 1876: telephones don't exist.
  • Until about 1940: calls go through an operator ("Number, please?"), and poorer characters must find a public phone or a friendly shopkeeper.
  • 1940s to 1960s: heavy rotary phones are common in homes, bars and offices.

Use the phone button on the Comms desk to call someone you know, or ask the operator.

Telegraph

Telegrams are available from the 1840s. Before that, urgent news travels by courier or not at all. See Letters & Telegrams.
