The Manual › Eras & Identity

Choosing an Era

Each era is a self-contained world with its own language, technology, news and social rules.

Open the Eras page (or browse every story in the Library) to choose a time period. There are 12 historical eras, from Ancient Rome to Cold War Berlin, plus the mythological sagas: 136 hand-crafted stories in all. Each era is a self-contained world with its own slang, technology, social hierarchies and dangers.

Eras shape everything

  • Technology: there are no telephones in 1848 London and no telegraph in Rome. See Telephones & Technology.
  • Post and news: a Roman letter is carried by a slave courier on wax tablets, while a 1966 Londoner gets next-day post. See Letters & Telegrams and The Newspaper.
  • Time: before 1900 the narrator speaks of "dusk" and "the dead of night" rather than clock times. See Time & the Clock.

Beyond history

As well as the historical eras there are the myths and worlds built by the community. See Unbound & Community Worlds.
